French macarons come in an array of bright and lively colors and flavors, and are fast becoming popular wherever they can be found – which, outside Paris, isn’t all that many places…yet. Coaxed along by the world famous award-winning pastry chef Francois Payard, this French favorite’s moment seems to have arrived stateside, where it is slowly making its way into the American public’s lexicon of culinary delights.

Beginning one year ago, with the establishment of Macaron Day NYC 2010, Payard began a new American tradition that reflects one celebrated in his native Paris each year – Jour du Macaron, a creation of La Maison Pierre Hermé.

With this year’s celebration of Macaron Day NYC 2011 on March 20, participating bakeries in the New York area, including La Renaissance Patisserie, will be offering a free macaron to every customer. If you haven’t tried a French macaron yet, be prepared to fall in love with this ex-pat Parisian. Visit La Renaissance in Scarsdale, NY on Sunday, March 20 to see what all the fuss is about…

La Renaissance will have Galettes des Rois available during the Epiphany season. Call today to order yours, or stop by to pick one up: 914-472-0702

La Renaissance was proud to be included in an article by the New York Times last December that highlighted sources for these hard-to-find celebratory confections. We’ve included a bit of background on the Galette Des Rois for you here…

Epiphany (or Twelfth Night) is the day on which the three kings (Les Rois Mages) came to Bethlehem to visit the baby Jesus, born to Mary and Joseph two weeks earlier. Historically, Christians in France celebrate the holiday by sharing a Galette des Rois, a flaky, buttery pastry filled with frangipane and a touch of rum. Some families celebrate on the actual holiday — which, this year, falls on Thursday, January 6th — and some celebrate on whatever Sunday falls between the 2nd and the 8th. Generally, it’s considered normal to celebrate Epiphany at any point during the month of January.

No matter when you celebrate Epiphany, the eating of the Galette is always a highlight, as one lucky person will receive the slice that has a hidden secret called a fève. The fève is usually a small plastic or porcelain trinket in the shape of a king or a baby that has been tucked into the cake before it is sliced. If you are the lucky recipient of the fève, you become King For a Day, and the golden paper crown that comes with the galette is bestowed upon you!

We source our fresh, seasonal produce from local farmers around New York State and New England — sugar pumpkins for our pies might come from Wilkens Fruit Farm in Yorktown Heights, and golden delicious apples for our tarts might have been grown by Outhouse Orchards in northern Westchester. Even our heavy cream comes from dairies in the picturesque Hudson Valley.

We think that keeping it local means keeping it fresh and delicious! Taste the difference for yourself by sampling one of our crisp and buttery Apple Pies, our luscious Pear Almond Cream Tart, or our sinfully creamy Pumpkin Cheesecake.
